The controllers of large areas of land have the opportunity to manage it in ways which maximise benefit to wildlife. It is precisely this opportunity which imposes a considerable responsibility on those who wield such power.  Every species needs space in which to exist and resources on which to draw. With the power of ownership comes the responsibility of care. This is so far reaching that  it relates to all of the issues here discussed and many beyond. It may be argued that the more land an individual controls, the more may be expected of them in terms of environmental care. The Government has recognised this in its requirement of crown ministers, and the authorities they represent, to have regard to the protection of biodiversity within the extent of their principal remit. This requirement is embodied in Section 74 of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.

The private landowner is no less culpable to overall environmental well-being. Ultimately of course, what happens is largely influenced by the individual owner but perhaps each farm and estate should have a small biodiversity action plan of its own with a view to maintaining the diversity of species which live within its borders.
